When replacing a cylinder-head gasket or sealing an oil pan, the sealing surface must be cleaned of any residual gasket material. Although technically unnecessary, abrasives are still used for this purpose. The problem is that particles from these abrasives often end up in the oil pan and the coolant circuit via the open channels. This results in a proliferation of post-repair damage. The use of an unsuitable scraper can also cause damage to sealing surfaces.
